ARTS COUNCIL OFFERS FREE SUMMER WORKSHOPS
The Arts Council of Mississippi County in the historic Ritz Civic Center announces three summer workshops for children, youth and adults. Workshops offered include Stage and Special FX Makeup, Creative Beginning Photography and Beginning Acrylic Painting. Participation in these workshops is free. Advance registration is required.
ACRYLIC PAINTING FOR BEGINNERS WORKSHOP—June 27-30, 2016. Open to children age 8 and over, the workshop will be meeting daily from 9:30-11:00 AM. The students will each create an original work of art which will be part of the August Exhibit for The Ritz Gallery. Class size is limited to a maximum of 10 participants. This workshop is free, and all materials will be provided. Students will develop a basic understanding of primary colors while working with acrylic paints and canvas. They will also learn how to create a completed work of original art. Instructor for the workshop is April Borges, who is the featured Ritz Gallery Artist for the month of June. A native of Blytheville and a graduate of Blytheville High School and ANC, Mrs. Borges also holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology degree from ASU in Jonesboro. While in high school, she learned techniques in art, pottery, sketching, charcoal and other mixed media. She is excited to have this opportunity to lead a workshop for youngsters in hope of instilling a love for art in them. SIGN-UP FOR THIS CLASS IS NOW CLOSED. THIS CLASS IS FULL.
PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP—July 11-15, 2016. The Creative Beginning Photography Workshop is open to anyone age 8 and over, including adults. Participants will provide their own digital camera with removable memory disc. The participants will meet daily from 9:00-10:30 AM. They will visit various locations such as parks, the fire station, churches, and historic downtown Blytheville to provide a variety of subject matter for their photos. Students will be provided helpful hints through printed information and have daily discussions on various aspects of photography, but most of their time will be spent shooting photos. The workshop instructor will be David Lyttle. Mr. Lyttle is the Executive Director of The Arts Council of Mississippi County, and has been involved in photo workshops for youngsters for the past nine summers.
STAGE AND SPECIAL FX MAKEUP WORKSHOP—July 18-22, 2016. This workshop is open to students ages 12 and up. Adult participants are welcome. Students will meet daily from 1:30-3:30 PM. The purpose of this workshop is to introduce participants to the artistic use of stage makeup. They will learn about a variety of professional products available, how to design makeup with a character in mind, and techniques of applying stage makeup and special effects makeup, on themselves and on others. Allergy Note: This workshop will include the use of liquid latex and other latex products. Candie Groves will be the instructor for this workshop. Mrs. Groves is a teacher at Blytheville High School and has a Minor in Theater Arts from Arkansas State University, plus more than 25 years experience on and off stage, including co-directing all of the children’s plays at The Ritz since 2008. She also serves as President of the local community theatre group ACT 2! and is Vice President of The Arts Council of Mississippi County.
An exhibit of photographs by each student in the Photo Workshop as well as a collection of photos of the students involved in the Stage Makeup Workshop will be featured in The Ritz Gallery for the month of August. Participants will be honored at a Gallery Reception.
